Common Concerns

Parenting comes with a variety of challenges, and understanding common concerns can help you address them effectively. Here are concise tips for handling some common issues:

Left-Handedness

Hand dominance typically develops by age three and reflects brain wiring. If your child is left-handed, avoid forcing them to use their right hand, as this can cause confusion and delays. Support them with patience, encouragement, and tools designed for left-handers, such as specialised school supplies.

Thumb Sucking

Thumb sucking is a natural self-soothing reflex that usually resolves on its own by age six when permanent teeth begin to appear. Avoid pressuring your child to stop, as it can increase stress. Instead, observe when it occurs and gently redirect their attention with alternative activities.

Bed-Wetting

Bed-wetting is normal before age six or seven as children develop night-time bladder control. If it persists beyond this age, approach the issue with patience and understanding rather than punishment. Encourage behavioural changes like reducing fluids before bed or waking them during the night to use the bathroom.

Emotional and Behavioural Problems

Emotional challenges are common during times of change or stress. Negative behaviours such as tantrums, aggression, or withdrawal may arise. Help your child by creating a safe space for expression, validating their feelings, setting clear boundaries, and teaching positive social skills like problem-solving and turn-taking.
