Learning Through Play

Learning Through Play (LTP) was the flagship programme of the Hincks-Dellcrest Centre, Toronto, and taken over by the SickKids Garry Hurvitz Centre for Community Mental Health, Canada. The LTP materials can be used by parents and early childhood educators or professionals and provide information about how to support healthy child development for children from birth to 6 years of age. The illustrated materials are culturally inclusive, and have been translated into 11 languages globally.

Learning Through Play - India

In 1997, Bala Mandir entered into a partnership with the Hincks-Dellcrest Centre (now SickKids) in Canada to introduce the Learning Through Play (LTP) programme in India. Over the past 20 years, this programme has become integral to early childhood care and development (ECCD) initiatives across various Indian states.

Initially launched at the Bala Mandir institution, the LTP model addressed critical issues such as Early Childhood institutional care, health, kindergarten, home visitors, and play methodology. Many of these initiatives have now evolved into regular programmes at Bala Mandir, wherein partners can come and observe.

Since 2000, we have expanded the LTP initiative to include government and non-government organisations throughout India. This ‘Joy of Parenting’ training programme, which draws on LTP principles, has trained ECCD professionals, health workers, educators and field workers in diverse environments, including urban slums, rural communities, tribal areas, orphanages, etc.

In 2008-2009, Bala Mandir conducted master training sessions to empower partner organisations to train other NGOs and extend the LTP programme within their states. The programme has successfully broadened its reach from Chennai to Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Gujarat, and more recently Andhra Pradesh.

The LTPC materials for children aged Birth-3 Years and 3-6 Years are now accessible in English and six regional languages: Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Marathi, Tamil, and Telugu.

LTP Projects

BMRRC works with various channels to disseminate parenting messages across diverse communities and settings. Projects are primarily implemented as interventions within ongoing service and training programs, enabling partners to extend their focus from basic physical health and nutrition to encompass parenting and the psychosocial aspects of child development.
